Expert Document Review Before You Ship

You wouldn't send a contract without a lawyer checking it. Don't send export documents without Libretto reviewing them first.

The industry problem

The problem nobody talks about

Your freight forwarder moves your cargo. Your customs broker clears it. But who checks that the documents are actually correct before they're submitted?

60-80%

of Letter of Credit documents are rejected on first presentation to banks globally

#1

Documentation errors are the most common mistake in freight forwarding worldwide

$$$

A single discrepancy can cost weeks of delayed payment and thousands in bank fees

Why does this happen?

For freight forwarders and customs brokers, documentation is a support function — not their core business. Their revenue comes from moving cargo, not from getting your Certificate of Origin perfect. Documentation gets less attention, less specialist expertise, and errors slip through.

This isn't a criticism — it's a structural reality. Just as a business owner can draft a contract but still needs a lawyer to review it, an exporter can prepare documents but still benefits from an independent expert checking them before they're submitted.

Our process

How document review works

Simple, fast, and per-shipment. No lock-in contracts. You pay only when you ship.

1
Submit

Send Your Documents

Email your document set or upload through our portal. Commercial invoice, packing list, COO, BOL, MPI certificates — whatever your shipment requires.

2
Review

Expert Review

Our compliance specialist reviews every document for accuracy, consistency, regulatory compliance, and destination-specific requirements. For LC shipments, we check against UCP 600 and your credit terms.

3
Clear

Clear to Ship

You receive a compliance report detailing any issues found, recommended corrections, and a confirmation when your document set is clean. Typically within 24 hours.

Review scope

We review across four dimensions

Consistency

Document Consistency

  • Weights, quantities, and values match across all documents
  • Product descriptions are consistent and sufficiently detailed
  • Shipper, consignee, and notify party details align
  • Container numbers, seal numbers, and vessel details match
Compliance

Classification & Compliance

  • HS codes are correct for the product and destination
  • Country of origin declarations meet FTA rules of origin
  • Required certificates are present (MPI, phytosanitary, health)
  • Destination-specific requirements are met (legalisation, Halal, etc.)
LC review

Letter of Credit Compliance

  • Documents match LC terms and conditions exactly
  • UCP 600 compliance verified across the full document set
  • Presentation deadlines and shipment dates confirmed
  • Common discrepancy triggers flagged before bank presentation
Logistics

Shipping & Logistics

  • Bill of Lading instructions match commercial documents
  • Incoterms are consistent and correctly applied
  • Insurance requirements met (if applicable)
  • Dangerous goods declarations complete (if applicable)

The analogy

Think of it like a lawyer reviewing a contract

You draft the contract. Your lawyer reviews it before you sign. They catch the clause that would have cost you $50,000. Their fee? A fraction of what the mistake would have cost.

Your freight forwarder prepares your export documents. Libretto reviews them before they go to customs or your bank. We catch the discrepancy that would have delayed your payment by 30 days. Our fee? A fraction of what the mistake would have cost.

Who we help

Who uses document review?

Self-managed

Exporters Who Prepare Their Own Documents

You handle your own commercial invoices, packing lists, and certificate applications. You want a second pair of expert eyes before submission — especially for new markets or high-value shipments.

Forwarder-managed

Exporters Using Freight Forwarders

Your freight forwarder handles documentation as part of their service. But documentation isn't their core skill. We review what they've prepared and catch errors before customs or your bank does.

LC focus

LC Exporters Tired of Discrepancies

You sell under Letters of Credit and you've experienced the frustration of document rejections, delayed payments, and bank fees. Our UCP 600 compliance review catches discrepancies before your bank does.

New exporters

First-Time Exporters

You've followed our step-by-step guide and prepared your first document set. Before you submit, let us check everything is right. Peace of mind for your first shipment.

Independence matters

Why independent review matters

Libretto is not a freight forwarder. We don't move your cargo, and we don't have logistics fees or freight margins to protect. Our only interest is accurate, compliant documentation.

When a freight forwarder reviews their own documentation, they have a natural blind spot — they prepared it, so they're less likely to catch their own errors. An independent reviewer has no skin in the game except getting it right. That independence is what makes the review valuable.

FAQ

Common questions

How quickly do you turn around a review?
Standard turnaround is within 24 hours of receiving your complete document set. Same-day priority review is available for urgent shipments at a small surcharge.
How do I send my documents for review?
Two options: email your document set directly, or upload through our secure portal. The portal is particularly useful for larger exporters managing multiple shipments — documents are tracked, and reviewed versions are available for download after payment.
What do I get back after the review?
You receive a Libretto Compliance Report listing every issue found, the specific correction needed, and a clear status — either "cleared to ship" or "corrections required." For LC reviews, we specifically flag any discrepancy that would likely result in bank rejection.
My freight forwarder already prepares my documents. Why do I need a separate review?
For the same reason you'd have a lawyer review a contract even though your business partner drafted it. Documentation errors are the number one mistake in freight forwarding globally. Your forwarder's core expertise is moving cargo — ours is making sure the paperwork is right. We complement your forwarder, we don't compete with them.
Is there a minimum number of shipments?
No. Our per-shipment documentation service has no lock-in contracts and no minimum commitments — you pay only when you ship. For ongoing export management, we offer monthly retainer arrangements tailored to your volume and needs.
Do you only review, or can you prepare documents too?
Both. Many clients start with review and move to full-service document preparation once they see the value of having a specialist handle their compliance. We offer complete document preparation, MPI Trade Certification submissions, and Chamber of Commerce coordination for clients who want to hand over the whole job.

Catch the errors before customs does

Send us your next document set. We'll review it and show you exactly what we find. If your documents are clean, that's peace of mind. If they're not, we just saved you money.
